How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3122985 / 882688 Trash Compactor Roller Assembly

Replaced gears, bearing, power nuts, cleaned it up and repaint.

Removed the trash compactor from cabinet. Disassembled compactor shell to gain access to nuts holding the roller assembly. Replaced base roller assemblies. Reassembled. Replaced trash carriage roller bearing wheels. Reinstalled. AppliancePartsPros had a "how to" video that was helpful, though the model was different it gave insight which was useful. 

The two single rollers that attached to the drawer were really easy. No instructions were provided or necessary. The pair of rollers that attach to the base were much more difficult. The printed insrtuctions were for a Kitchen Aid compactor. I have an early Jenn-Air. The instructions were not quite good enough as the part construction had changed but I watch a YouTube video. That plus the instructions and having taken the whole machine apart a few weeks before enabled me to get it done properly. It was harder than the YouTube but I have a lot of tools and got it done in about an hour. Next time it would not take more that 20 minutes on the same machine. I needed a small Vice Grip and a large socket set to get the old rollers out. The rest was easy. It rolls great. I still have to adjust the tilt because it rolls a few inches by itself. That will take 10 minutes. 

After trying extra screws on the pedal and rails, I read how others had fixed a similar problem by purchasing the rollers that mount on the rails at the opening. I decided to replace all of the rollers and the pedal, just in case the pedal had worn at the contact area. We have cycled the machine 3-4 times with the new parts and I can still open the door with about the same amount of force as when it was new. I just followed the instructions that were included except I had to take the front sheet metal cover loose along the sides to get a socket on the hex nut. I did not completely remove the sheet metal, just gently pulled it back enough to gain access.

Removed the old ones and replaced them with the new ones. Was not easy small area to to reattach the nut. 

I reviewed the supplied instructions. I moved the brackets that interfered with the replacement rollers. I needed to bend slightly the front portion of the lower rail to get to the nut holding the old roller. After removing the nut, I was able to easily remove the old roller and put the new one in place. Tightening the nut to spec I then carefully bent the lower rail end back in place. Repeating the processing on the other side I was able to complete the job in about a half an hour. The new parts fit perfectly.
