How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5985208 / W10822278 Defrost Timer

Replaced the thermostat, heater and defrost timer. The parts came in 24 hours Customer service assisted by sending me the wiring diagram for the universal defrost timer within 10 minuets of my request. It was a pleasure dealing with them. 

Replaced thermostat and defrost timer...although probably only the timer was bad but ordered both parts and replaced both as long as it was apart. About $80, a lot cheaper than buying a new refrigerator. 

Dropped the control panel down in top of the frig unplugged old timer plugged in new one replaced control panel-done. 

Replaced the Defrost timer. Used small tools and needle nose pliers to work light bulb base loose and finally unscrewed then replaced. 

With a defrost timer and thermostat. The job didn't take long, it was getting the ice and clean up that took more time than anything else 

Replaced evap. Fan motor and defrost thermostate While I had it tore apart. I also changed out my sticky defrost timer too Because I’ve had to on occasion manual reset the Timer to defrost My Whirlpool side by side fridge is a 1999 model. The only thing that doesn’t work is the through the Door ice mechanism , but I’m fine with that. If I get another year out of it with the $90 I spent It will be worth it without paying $ 1800- to over $ 3000 for a new French style refrigerator 

Parts arrived 11/17/2017 to my surprise, excellent service and direct replacement parts for 2 different refrigerators.Customer picked up and installed them that afternoon. Problem resolved very happy tenants in my dad`s rental properties. Installed new temperature control unit and Defrost timer in the control panel within the refrigerator portion. Temperature control unit was the most difficult between the two as the capillary tube install and the installation of the temperature probe being the most time consuming, WITHOUT KINKING TUBING. BE CAREFUL. After installation, unit is working like a new side by side. 

Replaced the cold control and defrost timer for good measure, wasn’t too bad the hardest part was trying to reuse the plastic tube that slides over the cold control probe without crimping or bending it. I think the Cold control was the real culprit but since I am in there might as well replace defrost timer too. All seems to be back to normal now. Saved hundreds on buying a new fridge for my mom.
