How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5988891 / W10846428 Timer

Replaced timer. 

Ordered a new timer and replaced the old one. It works great.

Called a couple of local appliance parts supply houses. No one had a new timer in stock, and they wanted an outrageous price to procure it. Ordered a new timer from Appliance Parts Pros by the dryer's model number. The new timer was 1/2 the $$$ of the local supply houses, and was delivered with standard shipping the next day. 

Found a fix-it video on Youtube. Ordered the part from AppliancePartsPros. Followed the video. It was very simple to open the control box, unplug the faulty timer and plug the new one back in place. Ten minute job. 

I watched a super helpful YouTube video after googling “whirlpool dryer knob broken”. 

Since it was the connection of the main control knob on the timer that was broken, rather than just replacing the knob, I had to replace the timer. Once I had access to the old timer, accessed fairly easily by removing the back plate and flipping the head unit off the main body of the dryer, it was easy to swap the connections, one for one and then mounted back in the assembly 

I looked it up online and watched a couple of videos. I determined that I could easily fix it, so I ordered the part and installed it myself. 

Ordered part from AppliancePartsPros one day and received it the very next day. It was the same as the original and cost me less than half the factory's price. 

The timer was super easy to replace. I simply removed the panel on the back of the console, removed the timer, disconnected the wires, reconnected the wires to the new timer and put it all back together. The hardest part might have been moving the dryer in and out of position!
