The nylon gear had snapped when the unit got jammed up on some debris and overloaded the drive.
Fairly easy fix, but my version of the stand mixer had screws with square drive heads, so beware if you don't have that driver in your toolkit.
Also, removing the pin to get the planetary off needed some pretty good hammering.
