A bad bearing in the mode shifter and shaft assembly was the cause of the noise. So I'm glad I ordered more than the tub bearing. Instructions in the great video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdrhKqtzK_k) made repair fairly easy. Removing the hub washer was very difficult. Even with a spanner wrench, I had to pound, pound, pound with a heavy hammer until I finally noticed some movement. I tried cleaning crud from the threads and liberal use of WD-40 but it just took a lot of persistence and patience. The engineer that put threads on a square post in a place that can get wet and collect crud should be applauded by the nuts that are trying to make it more difficult for regular folks to repair appliances. Unable to pry the tub bearing from the tub, I resorted to driving it out as other reviews mentioned. The only step missing from the video was the replacement of the rotted and utterly destroyed tub seal which likely led to the ultimate failure of the mode shifter bearing. Fortunately, I had seen that a new seal comes with the mode shifter so I did not have to order one.
