New support struts did the trick. Apparently Samsung has replaced the originals with a superseded part. Had to remove two screws on the back (that hold the top on). Putty knife to release the two spring clips on the front and the top lifts right off. Takes about a minute a strut to replace with no special tools, except for some gloves to keep the slimy crud off your hands and to get a better grip on the strut rod.
Intentionally loaded the machine with different fabrics to the top to try to get the machine to send an imbalance code on the first test wash after the repair and it wouldn't do it...cycle completed perfectly.
