Susan B Fullerton , CA January 09, 2015 Appliance: Model TAPPAN 12-1019 WALL OVEN Tappan wall oven wouldn't come on bad igniter The hardest part was getting the gas valve to turn. An old all metal one from the 1950s located in a narrow space that usually holds a drawer. Finally got it to turn using a crescent wrench on the metal part that turns and a pipe wrench to hold the valve still. Then it was smooth sailing except for stripping the wires on the short bit attached to the oven. Had no desire to pull the oven out of the wall, so made it happen. Turned the gas and power back on and presto the oven lights again. The part came in just one day. I had asked at a local appliance repair shop and they said a week or ten days to get the part and it cost twice as much. Thanks to you guys I can bake if I want to again. Oh how yes the video is helpful. Give me confidence to do it by myself. John A Comfort , TX April 05, 2015 Oven was taking several minutes to light; oven igniter was glowing but weak This is a simple repair, which took me about 1/2 hour to accomplish. First I had to unplug the appliance and slide it away from the wall slightly to gain access the rear electrical cover plate, and then disconnect the wire nuts connecting the old igniter. To remove the igniter, I removed the oven racks, lower interior oven panel, flame diffuser, and a small metal cover above the igniter. The igniter was held with two screws. Installation was just a matter of feeding the wires of the new igniter through the hole to the rear of the oven, making the connection with wire nuts, and reassembling everything like it was. No need to disconnect the gas line, but to be safe, I checked the connections for leaks after sliding the appliance back into position. The only tools required were a Philips screwdriver, 3/8" and 5/16" nut drivers, and wire cutter/stripper. Read More...
