Ronald W Bend , OR June 29, 2015 Appliance: Frigidaire Refrigerator FRS26ZRFW3 Broken drawer in frigidaire side by side refrigerator Thanks to APP, I was able to find exactly what I needed from their web site, and ordered a new drawer. It was the "middle drawer" - one of the two for vegetables. I recently had to replace the "deli-drawer" for the same reason (too much weight in a very flimsy design), and got some help with APP to straighten up a goof that I made in my order. The "load" of food is carried along the side-flange of the thermoplastic drawer when the drawer is closed, but when opening it, the load transfers to less and less surface - which means eventually it has most of the weight concentrated onto a tiny section of the flimsy, thin plastic. Put a mini-watermelon of a head of cabbage into the drawer and watch out. It doesn't take much to have a failure. So, how to remove and replace it: pull the drawer out, along with the glass/plastic hanger shelf on top: Only tool required: Your fist. 1. Gently lift the front and it will easily come out even if the drawer is jammed due to the affore-mentioned breakage. Once out of the refrigerator, it is easy to take the drawer off the glass top with just a little bit of forcing. it goes without saying - when you take the foodstuff out of it, clean the glass/plastic top with lots of soapy water and rinse thoroughly. I took the top apart (glass just pops out so be careful to not break it) and got into all the tiny crevasses and cracks designed into this unit. There's more cleaning to do in the third step, so don't put away the cleaning material. Even though we are a pretty germ-freak household who cleans the appliances a lot, it wasn't pretty. 2. Carefully use the palm of your hand to "pop" with the initial force that begins the slide of the face of the drawer "up" from the bottom slot that it rests on. Visualize a picture frame with a glass pane that slides into slots into the frame. Since this is the Removable stage of the process, you aren't worried about hurting the drawer, so go ahead and and use the palm of your fist to bang it out. The drawer-front is pretty strong - if only the rest of the assembly was - so it can take the hand-beating. At first, you may be tempted to use a rubber mallet - DON'T. Enough said. 3. After cleaning the face of the drawer, align it like you would the imaginary glass into the slots of the imaginary picture frame. Then slide it down the slots (lots of wiggle-room thanks to the flimsiness of the drawer) until it reached about 1/8" from the bottom of the drawer. At that point, study how the slot on the bottom of the drawer is important as the final resting place which gives the drawer a little stiffness. It is easy to do but an enormously important step. I found I had to 'bang' the center of the lower edge of the drawer as I was sliding it the final eighth of an inch so it did not bend out and jamb against the stiffer slot of the drawer front. If it gets ugly on you - no problem - just reverse course and slide the drawer front up a ways and rethink your plan. This paragraph is a lot longer than what I am trying to explain is difficult. 4. There it is - you are finished except to gently replace the glass/plastic top into the refrigerator BEFORE installing the drawer. Make sure (I didn't the first time) you get the two alignment bosses into the holes in the back of the refrigerator, or when you load up the drawer and put things on the top of the shelf, you will have a surprise mess to clean up. Then simply slide the EMPTY drawer onto the sleeves hanging down from the top glass/plastic shelf. Despite my griping about the structural design, the mechanism itself is simple and easy to replace. PS: I've had several refrigerators over the years including two Frigidaire's, and this is common to all of that brand. I don't recall this as a problem with the other brands but cannot for sure say they are immune to this poor engineering. After the first one I changed, this one was quite easy - I knew exactly how to remove the drawer-front and replace it onto the new drawer. You should have no problem. I cannot say enough about how well Appliance Parts Pros (APP) provide great service to we do-it-yourselfers. I'm not a natural handyman but, with their help, I can git er done along with the best of them. And I never get a snicker when I talk to their folks. Great place!
