Wilbur C Washington , DC December 16, 2017 Appliance: Model JE1590SC001 Microwave would not heat but had power 14 year old GE Profile microwave wouldn't heat, but had power. Read reviews here. Ordered triumvirate of magnetron, capacitor, & diode. Was hoping not to need the capacitor as this was an expensive part; and if not needed to return to AppliancePartsPros, which has been SOP. After watching a couple YouTube videos of microwave capacitors being shorted, I made a capacitor discharge tool ordering 24W 100K Ohm resistor and high voltage test wires w/ alligator clips from amazon. At the same time, make sure to order tamper proof star key, T-15 size (I think) or a set. I have a lot of tools, and saw other reviews that torx was needed, which I have a full set and then some of. But these are torx-security screws - different from a standard torx. When I went to remove the cover, I found the torx-security screws and had to order again from amazon, delaying repair two more days. Once cover's off, repair is easy. As others suggested, use smart phone to take photo of wires' original connections before disassembly. Pull connectors from capacitor and discharge (for safety). Swapped magnitron and diode, and microwave was back in business. Wait til all four screws are threaded on the magnitron before snugging any down. The four screws are through a flange that runs the magnitron's perimeter. Tightening the screws deflects the flange a bit, which can make threading and seating other screws difficult, if done one at a time. Also replaced bulb while cover was off, which had gone out a couple months previously (14 year life span, pretty darn good). Can see why owners are irritated with bulb replacement. Cheap part and easy to replace (don't have to do anything with high voltage components) with just one mounting screw and connector, but have to have torx-security driver to remove cover. Close up. And get thanks from wife. Read More... 51 People found this story helpful Do-It-Yourself Rating: Repair Time Estimate: 15-30 minutes Tools: Screwdrivers
Robert A Spring , TX November 16, 2014 Appliance: General Electric Free Standing Microwave JE1590SH02 Bulb burnt out (cavity lamp) After purchasing the replacement bulb I had a lot of problem removing the cover.Turns out that three of the six screws in the back required a special tool. After trying different types of screw drivers to no avail, I took a picture of the screw and went to my local hardware store for some help. I had previously tried different sizes of Torx screw bits but none worked. It turns out that the screw was a Security Torx (has a center post in the middle of the screw) and required a TT20 bit, I was able to open the microwave cover and replace the lamp,by removing just two screws that held it in place and installing the new lamp in less than 5-minutes. I now have a security Torx bit set for toolbox for future use on other things. I almost threw in the towel and thought about calling in an appliance repair man due to the time spent (2 hours) going to several different hardware stores looking for the the right tool. Curt C Johnson City , TN November 15, 2014 Appliance: General Electric Free Standing Microwave JE1590BH01 Burned out light 10 yr old Removed the outside cover. And yes-the two bottom screws on the back are pinned, security screws. If you don't have the tool (and don't want to go out to buy it) just use a small hack saw to cut a slot in it so you can remove it. The repair was complicated by the fact that the oven is cabinet-mounted. So, extra work was required removing the ducting and outside case. Make sure the cover locks back onto the front frame when done. There are overlapping edges that should interlock. You don't want extraneous microwaves leaking out. Also make sure ALL screws are back in their proper holes so everything is buttoned up. For the small cost I also replaced the fuse while I was in there as the old one was 10-yrs old. Bought that here as well. Why not do that while you are in there? Read More... 23 People found this story helpful Do-It-Yourself Rating: Repair Time Estimate: 30-60 minutes Tools: Screwdrivers
