Scott M Asheville , NC October 04, 2015 Appliance: General Electric Refrigerator GSS22KGMDWW 12 y o rental unit ge side by side was missing parts and dispenser was non functional First I ordered a new ice door seal, spring, and crank, figuring the condensation in freezer and door was caused by ice door not sealing. Turns out the solenoid for the ice door was completely rusted and was the primary cause, if it had been replaced early, it would have saved the dispenser board. What then happened was the moisture in the freezer door damaged the control board rendering dispenser controls inoperative as well as the heater around the dispenser. Now the freezer door is dripping condensation damaging the door (rust), and causing mold to grow under the Pergo floor. This is in a rental, and could have been prevented if the ice door solenoid was promptly replaced. BTW, the appliance parts pros video was for the wrong model. and I destroyed the dispenser trim mistakenly, after being instructed to pry it off from the outside. It actually is removed from the INSIDE, AFTER removing the freezer door inner door shelf to reveal the screws. In view of this in door moisture, and the parts tally for replacing the aforementioned parts it would exceed half the cost of a new refrigerator. I decided to remove the dispenser completely, including the water line from the solenoid valve. I sealed the dispenser opening in the freezer door with duct tape, and covered both door's exterior with panels to match the kitchen cabinets. Now I sprayed foam insulation in the door cavity and old ice chute, capped the dispenser connectors with electrical tape, replaced the freezer door perimeter seal and shelf, put a piece of white duct tape over the ice chute in freezer side of door. The last thing was unplug and remove the ice auger motor in back of freezer, under the icemaker, this is optional. The icemaker and refrigerator operate normally, and no more leaks! I will never buy a refrigerator with a dispenser for my rentals or my home, they start with the problems after 2 years usually. Hope this helps someone else to save a perfectly good refrigerator, with a few hours of effort. Of course the deactivated dispenser can stay in place after the ice chute is sealed, that is up to you.
