I warmed it up in the clothes drier while removing the old one. The new one went in easily, the the problem is solved. It appears the magnetic strip in the gasket weakens over time. No tools required, didn't have to remove the door or anything. The old gasket pulled off with a little finger pressure, and the new gasket pressed into place easily. Problem fixed.
