Martin M Saratoga , CA July 10, 2017 Appliance: General Electric Microwave PEM31SM4SS Door wouldn't open pem31 ge microwave oven The door latch is opened by the lever switch, which sits on a plastic peg on the body latch - part AP3186330. This plastic peg had broken. Talking to the dealer, it sounds like a common problem. It's fairly simple to open the cabinet and remove the old part. The manual claims that the big capacitor has a self-discharging circuit, but it's best to briefly short it out with a resistor just to be sure. The biggest issue is the three electrical interlock switches that also click into place on the body latch. The little latch-tabs that hold those switches in place are quite weak, and I broke one while trying to install it - it broke way too easily in my opinion! Before removing the switches from the old unit, label them and take a few photos so you know which wires go where.. It's very hard to replace the switches when the new latch-stopper in replaced in the oven. The best option is to remove the wires from the switches, click the switches into place on the body latch outside of the oven, replace the body latch in the oven, and then re-connect the wires to the switches.
