Randolph M Chicago , IL October 19, 2018 Appliance: Model GE XL44 GAS RANGE Previous tenant's apparent oven fire. The previous tenant in my daughter's new apartment apparently had a grease fire of sorts in the GE XL44 gas oven. This left the insulating double glass panes so fouled up that one could not see into the oven. I removed the oven door (just lifts off the hinges) and proceeded to disassemble the door so as to get to the glass panes. That's when the real problems arose: the window seal rope, which lays around the edge of the opening to the oven, was burnt to a crisp -- see photos. The oven door gasket, while still serviceable, was charred and rigid in the lower portion. I knew these would have to be replaced. I ordered both the door gasket and the window seal rope. Meanwhile, it took about 1 to 1 1/2 hours to clean the glass panes using a scrub brush and Barkeeper's Friend--oven cleaner did not even make a dent. When the items arrived, I was surprised that the window seal rope was actually a door oven gasket, even though the package clearly indicated a WB5K3 -- see photos. I figured that since I had only 2 days to repair the oven door I would make do with the door gasket filling the space where the window seal rope goes. First...as others have noted, the oven door gasket does not clip on; it has to be carefully placed along the inner door perimeter with the short edge laying against the inside (back away from the oven) of the door frame where the glass panes nest. To do this, there is a frame with 4 hex nuts on the inside of the door which must be removed, remove the frame and then, beginning at one corner, lay the gasket down and secure the corners sequentially. Nowhere is there a video showing how to do this. As to the window seal "rope", I just carefully placed the oven door gasket around the perimeter, with the thicker edge towards the window opening. You need two people to do this. Once the "rope" is in place, carefully lower the glass pane sandwich onto the "rope" and secure the glass pane sandwich with the clips which attach to the oven door. It is advisable that all the loose fiberglass insulation be removed when doing this as you can better see where the attachment holes for the various parts. Once the insulation is stuffed back, attach the aluminum retaining frame, slide the outer glass door into its slots and secure the hex nuts on the bottom of the door. Note: I did question why I paid about $26 for the WBK41 gasket and only $10 for the WBK43 window seal "rope", but there was not ime to return the latter for the correct part.
