This recoil spring and pulley assembly is used in a variety of small gasoline engines that power devices such as mowers, lawn tractors, and log splitters, among other yard and landscaping devices. The assembly works by tightly coiling the spring in the starter housing. When the starter rope is pulled, the tension on the spring is suddenly released, creating a spark that fires the air/fuel mixture. The combustion starts the engine.
