Daniel D Chesterfield , MO September 12, 2020 Appliance: Kenmore Microwave 72166462500 Our microwave made a "pop" sound and stopped working/ I have a multimeter so I was able to check the fuse per website recommendations and it was blown. However, the capacitor on the microwave was also original so I elected to replace the capacitor, fuse, and the ground protect diode. The repair was very simple (making sure the capacitor was discharged before replacing) and the microwave is now up and running again. Excellent trade to buy $40 worth of parts rather than a new $400 microwave. One nit - Kenmore puts a screw in the back that requires a special screwdriver head to get it out, probably to keep people from taking the cover off the microwave and working on it. I used locking pliers to grab the head of the screw and twist it out. When I put the microwave back together again, I used a normal screw so I wouldn't have to mess with that special screw again. Stephen F Payson , AZ November 14, 2020 Microwave section didn't heat. Had opened it up earlier and could see that transformer was not discolored. This particular oven has a built in "toaster" oven in the bottom, has been discontinued, and the kitchen cabinet had been specifically built to fit it's odd shape, so I figured it was worth a try to repair. Magnetron was the most likely culprit, with capacitor right behind, so I went for the trifecta. Relatively easy to install, only special tool needed was a tamper proof Torx for the screws in the back. Getting the strap on the capacitor was a bit tricky, had to remove the fan assy for access. Whole process took less than an hour, and it's back to like new performance. Happy wife, happy life! Read More... Do-It-Yourself Rating: Repair Time Estimate: 1-2 hours Tools: Screwdrivers
David G Boca Raton , FL March 16, 2024 Appliance: Kenmore Microwave 72180823500 The microwave not heating. No error codes. Replaced the magnetron, capacitor and diode (note all tested ok with DVM tests), suspect magnetron was bad regardless). Also using previously purchased parts, replaced the 3 door switches, the humidity sensor and the damper switch as the convection feature had been dead for many years (error code F5, microware is a 17 year old Kenmore Elite). After replacing all parts microwave heats and convection works again. Saved the $900 that a new (lesser quality) convection microwave would have cost and avoided the rework of the backsplash that it would have required due to different dimensions. Read More...
