Description

This steering gear is an integral part of the guidance mechanism for riding mowers and lawn tractors. This gear meshes with the turning mechanism of the wheels, connecting the front axle to the steering column. The constant, short diameter turning of riding mowers puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the steering pinion gear as well as the steering plate, causing the teeth of each of these parts to wear out. Over time, the steering will become less responsive until eventually the drive wheels will not respond at all when the steering wheel is turned. This is usually an indication that the steering pinion gear is stripped and must be replaced. Replacing this gear involves removing the nut and bolt that fix the gear to the mowing housing. Often, the bushing that sits beneath the pinion gear also needs to be replaced because of wear, and this is the best time to do that, as well. It's also a good idea to see if the steering plate teeth are also worn, as this is the ideal time to replace it as well. All parts should be replaced with genuine OEM parts, manufactured, as this replacement part is, according the specs of the original part.
