Description

This recoil spring is used as part of the starting mechanism for gasoline power tools such as cultivators, leaf trimmers, edgers, power vacuums, and blowers. These devices do not use battery-powered starters and thus must rely on magneto armatures and rope pulls. The recoil spring is attached to the rope pull and returns the rope to its proper place after being pulled. The coil spring receives a tremendous amount of torque again and again over time, and through aging and stretching, the spring will become inoperable and need to be replaced. Signs the recoil spring has weakened include a slackened pull from the starter rope that does not allow the engine to start or an absolutely slack pull rope. Replacing the recoil spring is a matter of detaching the pull rope and removing the starter housing. Remember to wind the pull rope around the new coil spring to allow the proper amount and length of rope. It will have to be steadied in place as the starter housing is refastened. Always use a genuine OEM replacement part, such as this one, in order to get parts that are identical to the originals.
