In a snowblower, the driveshaft is connected to a part called a worm gear. The worm gear turns the auger blades which eject the snow. The worm gear is connected to the worm shaft, which causes the auger blade to turn rapidly. Eventually, the incredible torque inside the machine, plus the occasional bumps and bruises experienced by the machine in operation and when being stowed, may cause the worm gear to malfunction. When the snowblower is erratic in its operation and fails to remove snow completely, there is a good chance the problem is the worm gear. To replace the worm gear, remove the housing to get to the worm shaft. Remove the entire worm assembly. Next, remove the blower fan and remove the worm gear. Grease the auger assembly before installing the new gear. Reverse the order to reassemble. While the snowblower is disassembled, it's the best time so exam the auger, driveshaft, sheer bolts, and tires for wear. You may find other parts that need to be updated.
