The Middle Spray Arm is an OEM replacement part for Bosch dishwashers. It is a rotating component located in the lower dishwasher rack that assists in evenly distributing water across dishes during the wash cycle.

Symptoms of a bad spray arm include:

  • Incomplete cleaning of dishes, even after multiple cycles
  • Soap scum or food soils remaining in hard-to-reach areas
  • Dishes coming out either spotty or dry in areas not rinsed properly

Causes of spray arm failure can be worn out or damaged arm brackets preventing proper rotation, cracks in the arm itself inhibiting water coverage, or mineral buildup inhibiting 360-degree rotation.

This OEM Bosch replacement part is also compatible with some Thermador, Gaggenau, and Kenmore dishwashers.

Questions & Answers

For Bosch Middle Spray Arm (Part Number: OEM13018653)

Dan S for Model Number SHE3AR52UC/07

After years of reliable service, this dishwasher now usually leaves some undissolved soap behind. (No change in the detergent used. No improvement when using brand-new detergent.) I have whipped open the door mid-cycle, and seen the lower spray arm rotate another few inches, but I cannot tell whether the upper spray arm is rotating at all. It seems to change position between peeks, but might be rotating slowly or intermittently. The arms are pristine inside. The sump area, including the impeller, is clear. MY QUESTIONS: (1) Might a stiffly-rotating upper arm be the problem? (It spins when poked, but not incredibly smoothly.) Shall I replace it, just to see? It's cheap enough. (2) How can I tell whether the impeller is disengaged from its shaft, or if the pump is enfeebled? I can't find any service manuals for the "SHE" series. (3) What other causes should I consider? Might there be a control-board problem? (I gather those happen, often from easily-fixed bad solder joints.) NOTE: The hot water is, and was, via a tankless that hates low-flow appliances, so the D/W has always needed to do its own heating. With a clamp-on ammeter, I have confirmed that the heater is functioning, at least when I'm looking. THANKS MUCH for your advice and sorry for the long query. I've been able to count on your expertise and parts service over the years.

Dan, If the upper spray arm spins by hand then the spray arm would be fine and it would be a matter of pressure getting to the spray arm. This issue sounds more likely a issue with the impeller of the unit. In order to check this you would need to disassemble the pump and check the impeller.
