Hello David, if the compressor is getting hot and the condenser/evaporator fans are running, then it could be an inverter or compressor problem.

Hello Jason, this compressor is powered by an inverter board, using a multimeter check for 120VAC between brown and orange wires and 4-12VDCc on the red and white wires, the compressor windings are about 10 Ohms between any 2 of the 3 compressor pins. If the compressor ohms correctly and the incoming voltages are present into the inverter board, replace the inverter board. WR49X10283.

Hello Anged, the compressor is powered by an inverter board, the possibilities are the compressor has failed, the inverter board has failed or the main board is not sending a run signal to the inverter board. These can be tested with a multimeter, the compressor windings are about 10 ohms each, the inverter has 120VAC incoming on Black and Orange wires, and the run signal is 4-10VDC on White and Red wires.

Sam H, You stated above that the unit was running...if the compressor is running then it is likely ok electrically. The tech sheet says approx. 10O. It does sound like a sealed system issue(possible refrigerant leak, restriction, or a compressor not pumping. For a sealed system issue you will need an EPA certified technician for those repairs per the EPA guidelines.

David, There is a top access panel which will have the control board, condenser coils, compressor, and the relay or inverter in that compartment. If the unit is not cooling at all, make sure that the fans and compressor are running. If they are not then it would be more likely a main control board issue.

Corrie for Model Number PGCS1RKZH SS

Hi. Our GE Profile refrigerator is only 7 years old and it stopped cooling last night in both the freezer and the fridge. It still makes some noise and I believe it is the fan(s) as I can still feel air being blown in both the fridge and freezer. It has a contained condenser coil system and it's noted as not having issues with clogging. I'm guessing it is the compressor that is out. Someone mentioned trying the compressor start relay first but I'm having issues locating that part in diagrams and on the fridge. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Corrie, This unit does not have a start device but uses an inverter board to run the compressor. This would be more likely the issue and is part number WR49X10283.

After you replaced the control did you measure voltage at the compressor to see if it is getting 120vAC? If it is getting voltage you will need to contact an EPA certified tech to replace the compressor. If no voltage you will need to check for where that volt is being lost.

Martha for Model Number ge profile fridge side by side doors

My GE Profile fridge has an Embraco VEGT 8H 230V-53 to 150 HZ compressor that is hot to touch. the repair tech told me to leave the top hood open to allow it to cool last month. A few weeks later, the fridge stopped cooling after the power went back on after a power outage. The control board and fan motor were replaced and things cleaned out. The unit is cooling now, but I still hear intermittent knocking and the compressor is still hot to the touch, same as before. I feel like I need to leave the hood open because it is still running so hot, which is unsightly. Is the compressor breaking? Is it normal for me to be unable to hold my finger on the compressor for more than counting 1, 2 before it burns my finger? What do you recommend?

1 Answer

Martha, There could be a couple of reasons for this. The first and most usual is a dirty condenser. If dirt and dust collect on the condenser it acts as a blanket and the heat cannot escape. Same result if the condenser fan does not run. Another issue could be from a leak with air in the system, they get pretty hot pumping air. And last could possibly be the compressor will soon fail.
