The Spring Idler is an OEM replacement part for Speed Queen residential clothes dryers. It works with the dryer drum to facilitate the controlled tumbling of laundry items during the drying cycle. Proper functioning is important for efficiency and effectiveness.

Causes of a bad spring idler can include material fatigue from years of repetitive use. It can also result from overloading the dryer with excessively heavy wet loads that put abnormal stress on the idler mechanism.

Symptoms of a failed spring idler include:

  • The dryer drum not rotating smoothly
  • Clothing failing to tumble freely and wrinkling instead
  • Prolonged drying cycles and increased energy use
  • Noisy squeaking or creaking emanating from inside the dryer

As the mechanism responsible for facilitating optimal tumbling, this OEM Speed Queen replacement idler spring restores smooth and efficient dryer operation.

For Speedqueen Spring Idler (Part Number: OEM18855384)

Rudy for Model Number LG8519W2

I am having issues with my belt fluttering while the dryer is running. The belt flutters after some time and hits the exhaust duct of the dryer. I think the heat from the drum is causing the belt to slightly stretch and thus flutter some period of time into the cycle. I have recently replaced the motor, idler pulley assembly, spring, belt, glide and felt pads, support rollers and brackets. What could be the root cause of this belt flutter as it makes quite the racket and is virtually silent otherwise while running.

Hello Rudy, This is an unusual issue and I believe it may be caused by harmonic resonance. I have encountered this several times in my career and recommend trying the fix that worked for me. Wrap the idler spring with electrical tape and re-install it. This will not work if my theory is not correct but if I am correct, this will silence the issue.

Josh for Model Number LG8519W2

My dryer makes a loud continuous shuddering sound after the drum heats up. Taking off the bottom panel I can see the belt running fine at start and after the drum heats I can see the belt fluttering. I recently replaced the following: Motor, felt pads, glide pads, roller brackets, rollers, idler pulley arm, and belt. I think that the spring for the idler pulley may need to be replaced to provide more tension to the belt and prevent the fluttering while running once the drum is warm. Is my thinking correct or could it be another issue? Thanks.

Josh, Your thinking is correct that the idler spring may be weak and when it gets heated it causes the fluttering of the belt.
