For Whirlpool Defrost Drain Pan (Part Number: OEM18038277)

Jaclyn for Model Number ED2NHGXVL01

My drain pan keeps overflowing. I replaced it with a new one since the old one had cracks. However, the pan still overflows when the water is turned on to the fridge. When the water was off for a couple days, the drain pan remained completely dry. Within a few days of the water being turned on, the drain pan kept filling up and overflowed again. I turned the water back off and the water level slowly decreased day after day. I have seen a lot of water drain from a white tube during what I am guessing is the defrost cycle. Any ideas on what's causing the problem and how to fix it?

Jaclyn, Thanks for the question!!! If the leak is only happening when the water supply is turned on then you must have a leak somewhere in those lines. You will need to look everywhere the water line goes to track down the leak.

Hello Quentin, this will require 2 people, the ref will need to be unplugged and empty and the door secured closed. Starting from the rear the ref will need to be tipped to the side, and a couple of wood blocks or similar put under the cabinet to hold it tipped. The rear base screws will need to be removed on one side to allow the base to be lowered slightly, the condenser fan bracket may need to be removed also, be careful of the sealed system tubing routing, at that point the drain pan can be worked out ,new pan installed and reverse the procedure.

Hello Suzy, If the odor is from the pan to fully clean it you would have to remove it entirely, you may just want to replace it, this is because if the odor has gotten into the plastic of the pan the odor will usually come back and its as much work to remove and clean it as it is to replace it. You would have to move the refrigerator out to access behind it and then remove the compartment cover for access. The replacement drain pan is part WPW10655368. There is a video on our website showing how to replace the drain pan.

Michelle, The water in the pan was from a defrost and should not stay long. A yard sprayer with hot water clears these drains easily. Make sure you have a good seal on your freezer door to the cabinet.

Don, In order to remove the drip tray you will need to pull the unit out and lean it back. Once you lean it back you will need to unbolt the drip pan in order to remove it.

Hello Vicky, You need to remove the water line from the unit and disconnect the water line at the bottom of the water valve to allow the water in the line to gravity feed out of the line. Then remove the water line from the bottom of the door to allow the water to gravity feed out of it.

Robert, There would be nothing with the refrigerator that would cause a mildew odor to come out of it. You will want to check to make sure that there is nothing that fell behind drawers or anything like that. Also check to make sure that the condenser fan is running because if it is not then the water will not evaporator from the drain pan under the unit.

Gary, Other than removing the water tank from the unit and emptying it, this would really be the only way to get all the water out of the unit.

Leslie, The drain pan will be located at the back of the unit and behind the panel at the bottom. This drain pan is not designed to be removed from the unit so you will want to clean it out the best you can.

Charlotte, This drip pan is not meant to be taken out to empty it. If the drip pan is full then there would normally be an underlying issue. Check to make sure that the condenser fan is running and check to make sure that there is not a water leak from one of the water lines. These are the 2 most common issues with the unit.
