The Spring is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It is a small but important internal part that applies pressure to dispense cubed or crushed ice from the refrigerator door. The spring is located within the ice dispenser mechanism and works with a lever to push ice out through the dispenser chute upon activation. 

Causes of a bad spring can include wear and tear over time, putting undue pressure on the dispenser by jamming items into the chute, or damage from excessive force applied during dispensing. 

Symptoms of a bad spring include:

• Ice cubes or crushed ice becoming jammed or failing to dispense properly  
• The ice dispenser failing to push ice fully through the chute
• Excessive pressure needs to be applied to activate the dispenser
• Ice cubes are dispensed in irregular sizes or clumps rather than individual pieces
