Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dryer Gas Valve Assembly (Part Number: OEM9282903)

Hello Trevor, this is a drive motor circuit problem usually unrelated to the heating circuit. Suggest you check if anything is causing the motor to overheat such as the drum being hard to turn, lint in blower wheel, motor bearings tight, etc. There is a temp thermostat built into the motor that if it overheats it will cut off the motor and once cools down will reconnect.

Pat, To replace the valve, you would unplug the unit, shut off the gas. Once this is done, remove the lint filter and the 2 screws under the filter. Once this is done pull the main top forward and it should release and lift up. Once you do this you will then remove the lower access cover using a putty knife between the upper and lower panel. Then take the screws out removing the front panel. Once this is done you will then take the belt loose and remove the drum. You will have access to the valve to remove and replace it.

Sam, With the igniter glowing and then shutting off but no ignition then this would either be a faulty gas valve or the coils are faulty.

Jerry, there should be two screws located on the plate that wraps around the top of the coils. Once these screws are removed, the plate will lift up and the coils would be replaced one at a time.

David, I would start with some gas leak detector and check the connections at the supply line and work my way to the gas valve. The valve would be the prime suspect due to the fact there is gas going to it all the time, especially if you can smell gas even when it is not running. The part number for the gas valve is [279923]

My dryer wasn't heating. I traced the problem to the coil pack and replaced the coil pack with Whirlpool 279834. Everything works fine now except we have a very faint gas smell (very faint, the gas company took 5 minutes to locate the exact source) coming from near the coil pack. Did I do anything wrong during installation? I noticed there was a silver clip under one of the coils. I tried to move it and it would not move, so I left it alone. What should I do to fix this? I thought of the entire gas valve assembly (Whirlpool 279923), but that is very expensive and I am not sure it would solve the problem. Perhaps a portion of this assembly could solve the problem or maybe I did something wrong installing the coils.

Andy, This issue would most likely be caused by a faulty gas valve. It sounds as though the valve is not closing off all the way and causing this issue.

I have an Admiral Gas Dryer and noticed that it takes a couple cycles to dry my clothes on the timed cycle. I researched it a little and found out that I might need the primary and secondary gas coils. It didn't look like a hard thing to fix until I took the dryer apart. I couldn't remove the coils because there wasn't any type of bracket holding them on. The screws on the Gas valve were very odd looking because I couldn't get the right screw driver to fit it because there seems to be something in the center preventing any type of insertion. Can the coils be replaced on this type of gas valve? If so how can it be done without damaging the gas valve? Or does the whole gas valve have to be replaced? There is no gas smell and it does fire up. Just not as often as it should. Thanks for your expertise. Joe

Joe, The gas valve coil assembly WPW10328463 is available, and in stock. To replace the coils, you need to remove power to the dryer and turn off the gas supply. Raise the top panel and remove the front panel. Use a short"stubby" phillips head screwdriver, remove the two small screws that attach the top bracket to the gas valve body, lift the bracket off the valve, lift the coils off the valve body plungers, revrese the procedure and test the dryer for heat and operation.
