David W Bradenton , FL August 19, 2019 Appliance: Samsung Dishwasher DW80J3020US/AA-00 Samsung dishwasher model dw80j3020us/aa door latch broken Hi I Have A SAMSUNG Dishwasher model # DW80J3020US/AA . Originally My Door Latch After Opening One Time And Heard A Snap. Didn't Think Much Of It At First ( Soap Door Sometimes Gets Stuck Shut / If You Load To Big Of Items In Front Of It ). Next Time Was Ready To Run Dishwasher , Door Did Not Latch. Door Felt Loose. Powered On Started It Up And Water Started Trickling Out. Turned Off Examined Door And Why Door Felt Loose And Water Coming Out. Noticed Latch Was In Latched Position ?. Took Out Latch. Examined Closer Didn't Really See Anything Wrong Nor Did I Have A Comparison. Operated Latch By Hand And All Seems Good. Manually Put Latch In Unlatched Position. Re-Installed Latch Assembly. Operated Door Open/ Closed At Least 5 Times No Problem. Then Someone Opened Door To Fill Dishwasher And I Heard A Snap. And Then That Person Informed Me The Door Was Not Staying Shut. Latch Had Tripped Again. Removed Latch Assembly Again. Further Examined Latch More Closely. Noticed Latch Functions As You Would Think Through Its Range From Unlatched To Latched. Only Thing I Saw Was The Excessively Over Powered Spring. This Spring Is Pulling So Much Force That Its Bending Plastic Pivoting Rods ( Extensions On Either Side ). These Pivoting Rods Each Have A Additional Molded Piece At The Ends that Look Like A Peanut / Banana. This Piece Trips The Electric Micro Switch To Tell The Dishwasher That The Door Is Opened Or Closed. My Conclusion Is The Over Powered Spring Is Connected On both sides To Steel Pins But Its Relying On Plastic Pins To Pivot On Causing Binding And Allowing The Latch To Spring Back. No Matter What The Failure Is Its Compromised. Found I Could Manually Trip Latch To Allow Door To Shut And Latch Till I Ordered Parts.I Am An Automotive Shop Owner / Technician. Now This By No Means Makes Me Anything Other Than That. I am Not A Appliance Repair Person But This Isn't Rocket Science. Found APPLIANCEPARTSPROS.COM Put In My Dishwasher Model # And Went To Parts Diagram And Found My Latch. Even Had A Picture For Cross Reference Great. Latch Came. Put Part In. Noticed Part Was Different. Didn't Think To Much About It. Got Home Put In Latch. Noticed Right Away There Was An Issue With The Latch Fitting Onto Door. The New Latch Design Hits / Contacts So That Door Will Shut It Latches But Because Of Design Change As Two Springs Instead Of One. The Second Spring Helps Tension The Latch Hook And With The Second Spring Being Compressed It Will Cause The Door latch Not To Have Proper Tension With A Door That Has About 1/8" Of Play. Now Dishwasher Will Not Start Up As Its Tripping / Not Tripping Switch Correctly. Got In Contact With APPLIANCEPARTSPROS.COM Customer Service Rep ROBIN H. Who Assisted Me And Was Very Helpful. This Is Where It Got Ugly. As The Manufacturer Gets Involved. As Parts Are New Dishwashers Come Out / Are Changed As Fast As Electronics Are ( Almost ) Old Parts Get Superseded And This Is What Happened To Me. The Picture On appliance Parts Pros Is A Picture Of The Original Part And There Was A Footnote For This At The Bottom Of The Page. That's It No Other Info. So Now She Is In Contact With Manufacturer And The Manufacturer Is Requesting Pictures Of Original Part New Part And Parts Installed So They Can See It. Second Part Of The Ugliness. After A Day Or Two Not Sure On Time Exactly. Now Manufacturer Is Telling Her That Its Me And I'm Not Installing It Properly. This Is Total Bullshit!!!. So Tried Again Just To Make Sure. Called Back To Appliance Parts Pros , Robin H Was Busy At The Time And Michael Bondi Assisted Me And He Also Was Very Knowledgeable And Helpful. He Was Also Very Patient As Well As I Was Starting To Get Angry. So After Taking This Apart A Number Of Times I Came To The Conclusion That Either The Front Faccia Or The Handle Would Need Replaced With The Newer Style Latch Assembly. After Discussing This With Mr Bondi And Looking At The Pictures I Took. The Pictures Showed The Handle Is Where The Latch Actually Attached To. I Decided To Order Upper Front Door Switch Panel Faccia And Inner Door Handle. As Soon As Parts Arrived Installed Latch Onto Handle For Testing And Latch Has Clearance And Works Correctly. Took All Parts Home And Installed. Dishwasher Working Correctly At This Time. If You Need A New Updated Latch You Will Need A New Door Handle As Well.
