This is a halogen element, which supplies heat to cooktops on ranges. The element uses a bulb to heat food rather than a gas flame or an electric coil. The quick cleaning and ease of use make it a common choice for kitchen stoves. If the element is damaged, there may be signs of wear, food may not fully cook, or electrical use may increase.Before starting, be sure that the stove is unplugged. The surface of the appliance should also be cool to the touch. Work gloves and a set of tools may be needed for the process. Lift the old element up at an angle to detach it from the terminals before aligning the new part with the drip pan. No direct hits on F123 code for my GE profile 30" glass cooktop using Google searches. Stumbled on "similar" symptoms saying it's probably the sensor integral to the heater element, so just replace the element as a complete unit. I am a very mechanically inclined person and still found it a sort of scary endeavor given then potential cost of being wrong and also taking apart a very expensive cooktop just to get to the point of being able to swap in the new LR element unit.
