Fixing the problem was quite simple. First, I removed the lid assembly (thanks to the diagrams supplied by AppliancePartsPros.com!). The balance ring clip fell between the drum and the plastic tub. I watched the step by step video, went out and bought a tub ring tool to remove the tub ring nut and did not find the clip.
