Originally thought, based on reading and reviews, the banging was coming from a bad dampening strap. After a quick replacement, the noise was better but not completely fixed. Two loads later, the noise became ten times worse. Further investigation led to seeing the bearing on the Mode Shifter and Shaft Assembly was blown out. Opened the control panel to find a very useful service instructions sheet which explained the self-diagnosis mode. Ran that mode suspecting the ATC thermistor and indeed it showed a thermistor fault. The sheet explained how to dismantle the front and top covers to access the ATC probe - resistance measurement was only 1.2 kOhms at room temp (should be 47 kOhms).
