This anode rod is the replaceable sacrificial component that helps protect a water heater tank from corrosion, extending tank life and keeping water clearer. Install a fresh rod when the old one is heavily corroded or after years of service. What it does:

• Sacrificially corrodes to protect the steel tank lining from rust and leaks
• Helps reduce rusty or metallic-tasting water that can come from a corroded tank
• Slows mineral buildup and tank deterioration when functioning properly
• Commonly replaced to address frequent corrosion-related symptoms or during routine tank maintenance

• Turn off power (electric) or shut off gas and pilot before servicing the heater; allow water to cool.
• Shut off water supply and relieve tank pressure by opening a hot faucet before loosening the anode.
• Part installs in the tank's anode opening; hand-start threads then tighten securely—do not overtighten.
