Description

This is a flywheel key manufactured by Craftsman and also used by Tecumseh for many of their small gasoline powered engines, particularly lawn mowers. A flywheel key is a part that sits between the flywheel and the crankshaft of the engine. When the engine turns over, the flywheel causes the equipment's moving parts to turn, such as the blades of a mower. A flywheel key is designed to sheer off or break without damaging the flywheel should the mower blades hit an obstacle. If the engine will not start, starts but does not have full power, or throws out a lot of engine oil and smoke, the chances are the flywheel key is damaged. If there is a tremendous amount of backlash when the user tries to pull the starting rope, that also is a sign of a damaged flywheel key.
