Paul D Swanton , OH April 07, 2015 Appliance: Maytag Refrigerator MSD2756AEW The ice maker motor for the auger dispenser internal gears stripped Replaced the motor, however not the easiest to do with the older refrigerators. First I had to remove the shelf that hold the ice bin. There is a small screw midway underneath the tray. Once removed the shelf is loose but still hard to remove. There is a side panel that is slotted andonce removed the shelf can then be removed, but not knowing that it is a very odd fitting unit. Then comes the unplugging which cannot be seen so it is all by feel. Once the shelf drops down the plug is now visible and with some effort can be pried loose. The shelf and motor assembly are now out of the refrigerator. The yoke to drive the auger can now be unscrewed left hand thread but alas the yoke is stripped and will not unscrew so to remove I used a Dremel cutoff wheel and cut the shaft off so that I could remove the screws and unhook the motor. To preclude the possibility of the new yoke doing the same thing I installed 2 washers to move the yoke out further so that it does not bottom out on the shaft. Everything back in place and functioning properly, we are making ice again. The tutorial video is good only on newer models. You question about the challenge to repair myself, well it was somewhat challenging but I have over 40 years of maintenance experience working on aircraft so diving into something like this was somewhat normal for me, plus I have more than enough tools to do the job.
