After cleaning, and with the help of my wife, the reinstalled clutch worked properly and the problem was solved. The tight workspace required my wife to start the retention bolt. Maytag has a hole punched in the bottom panel. This hole provides a very convenient exit for the retention bolt, but not much else. Maytag could have made the job a lot easier by making the hole a bit bigger and underneath the clutch.
