Nigel M West Hartford , CT December 20, 2015 Appliance: Whirlpool Washer WFW97HEXL2 Gunk build up in the boot caused mold washer was not draining properly in this area Removed washer lid, then upper front panel with controls. Popped off the front retaining ring, then pushed the boot into the washer area after detaching the detergent hose and LED light from the boot. Detached the door lock mechanism. Removed the front panel with the door. Then removed main retaining ring after loosening with Phillips head screwdriver. Removed the old boot. I found a bunch of nasty stuff in the cavity between the main drum and rotating drum which was blocking the boot from draining. While I had the front off, I also cleaned out the pump strainer which is located under the drum area. Just turn the lid in an anti clockwise direction - put a rag under to catch water. The old boot was actually OK, but I replaced it as I could not clean the mold off. Installation was easy, only tricky part was putting the spring loaded front retaining ring on. I figured out that if you half install it, then use needle nose pliers and pull the spring across at the bottom, then there is enough friction that it will not rotate around the boot, and you can easily get it on. Overall everything went smoothly and the wife is happy.
