Frank Z Seattle , WA January 03, 2017 Appliance: Model 110.45862400 The dreaded f11 error code We have 11 year olld Kenmore Elite HE3. After 5 yr, it started failing with "FDL" code (Door Lock). Replaced door lock several times with mixed results. Finally realized relay in CCU was culprit and subsequntly found that tapping the CCU actually got the thing working again for several loads. This went on for several years. More recently machine started giving the F11 code (comunications error), occasionally at first but then more and more frequently. After reviewing a number of blogs on the subject, I decided to replace the CCU from Appliance Part Pros. This definitely fixed the FDL error (door locks positively energized, not vaguely as before), however F11 error persted. So I don't regret getting the CCU. Now other blogs suggested replacing the relays in CCU and had I been technically savvy enough to locate those parts and put them in, that probably would have solved the FDL problem without replacing the board. Toyed with idea of replacing MCU however at times during the process the motor worked just fine as well as the drain pump, solenoid valves, etc. so I finally struck on the idea that my problem was with the actual plastic connectors which interface between the wire harness and the CCU and MCU, and also the connectors at the motor unit. I found no blogs on how to improve these connections. But it appeared that the connectors work by inserting a cut (but not stripped wire into the plastic connector and then at factory the prong with a knife edged V is inserted into the connector base which slices the wire insulation and makes the mechanical connection between wire and prong. After a decade of vibrations and corrosion, I speculated that small interface between prong and connector had deteriorated enough to degrade the signal quality to a point where the fragile electronics got confused and threw off a code, stopping the cycle. So on the MCU and CCU connectors I took a tiny screwdriver and gentle hammer strokes right at the base of the "U" in the connector socket, hoping this would force the knife "V" of the prong into a more positive connection. On the white motor connector, I used a very small file with sandpaper attached to clean up both sides of the male prongs on the motor side of connector. Also used the tiny screwdriver again to jam alongside the wires entering the plug from the MCU. To my vast relief, this seemed to fix the problem (at least for now). We have now run 3 or 4 loads without issue. I suspect over time the wire connections will start breaking down again and i will probably repeat the process. I also note that a motor wire harness is available (possibly with another vendor) for $73.89. It seems a shame to have to pay that amount and replace all those wires when the problem is with a tiny little connector, but in with hindsight, in my opinion, that is where my F11 problem was at. The difficulty of the repair for me was not in the work, but in trying to figure out the source of the problem. My advice to others who have the F11 error is to FIRST check the small 3-wire connectors going into the back left of the CCU, which run into the MCU (located on underside left of the washer, next to the motor, and the white connector at motor. By checking I mean doing your best to jiggle the wire/ prong connections, which I think are the weakness of this unit.
