Jeff C Parker , TX July 11, 2014 Appliance: Model KENMORE 665.13883K800 Wouldn't respond to buttons to start/stop/cancel but would respond to the wash selection buttons First I did some diagnostics -- took everything apart and did remedial trouble-shooting. I used the diagnostic manual (bought on ebay through a manual vendor) to trouble shoot the "appears to be dead" problem. Couldn't figure out the problem. I initially thought the unit was dead as I only tried the start/stop/cancel buttons. But, when I tried the selector buttons (heated dry, extra rinse, etc...) and discovered they were working, I thought there was a reasonable chance it was the control panel itself. Some google searches turned up a common problem that the ribbon cable on this unit is prone to wear/rust which will erode the cable itself causing some buttons to refuse to respond. Pulled the ribbon cable back and looked at the back side to reveal several areas of corrosion. Decided pretty quickly I wasn't capable of a ribbon cable repair so I bought a new control panel, plugged it in, and the dishwasher is working again like a champ. Replacing the control panel is a snap. It's just screws holding the whole thing together. Diagnostics to confirm that is your problem are more challenging. The best article I found was actually for Maytag dishwashers but the instructions worked perfectly and seemed identical for mine as well (I believe my Kenmore is technically made by Whirlpool as indicated by the "665" model but who knows...)
