William K Cleveland , TN January 22, 2016 Appliance: KitchenAid 36" Electric Built-In Downdraft Cooktop KECD865HBL3 Glass cooktop was broken and chipped on edge exposing burner components Turned off power at the breaker panel for the appliance. Disconnected vent duct, and lifted unit up, resting on some 2x4s I had to allow removing the attachment screws below the surface. Ensure unit is NOT resting on the glass cooktop you will be removing. Remove screws on all four sides, remove from burner unit, and install replacement glass top. Reverse process to reinstall. I used black silicone high temp RTV to seal edges in case of boil-overs later. Re-energize. It is extremely helpful to have a second person to assist. Use gloves to guard against sharp metal edges during the removal and re-installation.
