Peter F Okatie , SC October 20, 2017 Appliance: Whirlpool Washer WTW8600YW0 Washer door would not stay in the open position The first big trick is deciding what is wrong, there seemed like four possibilities. The two right angle brackets and the two hinge assemblies. By opening and closing the door and pulling the tub to one side you can feel the spring flexing (or not) on the right side of the door. The left side is way more difficult or impossible as it is obstructed by the bleach dispenser. In my case, I could feel the right spring flexing so I assumed it was okay along with its right angle bracket which is located into the door by two screws. The next thing I checked was the right angle bracket which is located also by two screws into the door and into the left hinge assembly. It seemed logical that there would be some kind of a key way on the bracket to drive the hinge assembly. To check the bracket it needed to be removed. The bracket is retained by two screws. To remove them I used a 7/64 Allen wrench. This was the most difficult part of the repair, maybe it was a metric size, not sure. You only need to remove one of the brackets and the other side can be removed in tact. I concluded both right angle brackets were still serviceable and the right hinge assembly was probably okay but to be sure I ordered both left and right hinge spring assemblies. To get at the two hinge assemblies requires the top of the washer to be unscrewed and lifted upwards. Before doing this carefully un-clip the bleach reservoir. With the top lifted upwards and the bleach reservoir un-clipped you should now be able to see both hinge spring assemblies. In my case the left hinge assembly spring was corroded and broken, so this was the problem. I suspect the bleach reservoir had leaked or had been over filled which had caused the corrosion. Retrace your steps and the job is done. Good project for a rainy day, BTW our washer is about 4-1/2 years old and needless to say disconnect the power and removal of the water lines makes it easier. Dylan W Lander , WY November 03, 2014 Appliance: Whirlpool Washer WTW8800YW0 Clothes washer lid would not stay open and kept falling down when trying to load I replaced a broken part which attaches the hinge to the lid spring assembly and replaced both hinges which were twisted/bent. The springs themselves were ok but a part in the assembly had broken so one spring was shouldering the entire weight of the lid and the hinges had twisted. This machine is not that old and it seems as though the glass lid is a little too heavy for the hinges. I was very impressed with how easy it was to locate the replacement parts online and how fast they showed up.
