The Interlock is an OEM component specifically designed for Whirlpool microwaves. Located inside the door assembly, the interlock provides a safety function that prevents microwave energy from emitting when the door is opened.
Composed of a magnet and lever switch beneath a metal shield, the interlock uses electromagnetic principles to immediately turn off microwave power if the door is opened during a cook cycle. This ensures safe access to hot food inside the cavity.
Causes of a bad interlock include worn contacts or weakening of the magnetic mechanism from sustained use over time. Physical damage or debris interfering with smooth lever operation are also possible causes.
