Ryan P Middletown , PA June 21, 2015 Appliance: Jenn-Air Refrigerator JS42SEDBDA Obnoxious freezer fan noise and eventual ice dripping/freezing in the freezer compartment I dealt with an obnoxious buzzing/grinding noise from the freezer ceiling fan (as ice dripped down and the blades churned against it). Later, the water dripped into the rest of the freezer compartment and delivered a nice coating of ice on everything. I'm a new homeowner, and never opened a fridge before, so I'm a novice & this is my 1st experience. (1) I removed all food from the refrigerator/freezer. (I had a 2nd, luckily. You could rent one for the day if needed.) Turn off the power (switch above the main fridge unit). If a lot of ice has collected, you may want to let the fridge sit and thaw the ice with the doors open (and/or hair dryer) with towels to collect the water. (2) I removed the ice bin, and the ice maker enclosure it sat on. The enclosure sits on 4 supports along the side, you can lift upward and forward slightly to unseat the enclosure. There's a wire harness behind that you'll want to disconnect. (3) I removed the light shield (push on 2 front tabs to release) (4) I removed the air diffuser with light bulbs (4 screws). You'll want to disconnect the wire harnesses to the Fan and the Air Damper (motorized flap/door between fridge/freezer) (5) I removed the Fan and Air Damper (motorized flap/door between fridge/freezer), with 2 screws each. (You could get away with unscrewing 1 fan screw, and swinging the fan out of the way) (6) I then removed the evaporator cover (metal plate with fan hole). I struggled with the angle of the screws. I don't believe they were (or could be) screwed in straight. (Note: When I put it back together, I screwed them back in at a slight angle.) (7) The bottom of the evaporator drain tray is now visible (white styrofoam). Unplug the wire bundles going to it. You can pull straight down to remove the tray. (Careful that you don't bend the fins of the evaporator that you can't see). Tape may have once held this in place, so be prepared to yank. Also, if you didn't let the ice melt completely first, the ice will bond it to the evaporator or side of freezer compartment. Also keep in mind that the drain tube (clear rubber tube clamped around a metal drain) will need to come with it, OR taken out first. (There is a replacement clear rubber tube in the replacement kit). The rubber tube exits the freezer and into the top section of the unit (above fridge/freezer) into a black drain tray. I struggled here, and actually rolled the fridge out from the wall and removed the back panel to get the rubber tube out of the hole. (8) Now that the evaporator is exposed (metal fins showing), per instructions, you'll pull off the the thin strip of white styrofoam on the bottom of the left side (when looking up, it goes front to back). It's an inch or two wide and a fraction of an inch thick. When you pulled out the drain tray, the strip might have also come with it if you don't see it. (9) Next, unplug the defrost thermistor (which tells the unit when the unit is defrosted). You'll keep it unplugged permanently (yes, forever) so it does a long (6hr) defrost cycle. The wire is blue-yellow coming from ceiling. (10) On your new drain pan, remove the paper strips on the seal (Butyl). Carefully install the drain pain like the old one was (drain towards back). Make sure it is snug against the evaporator. (I accidentally pinched a wire... make sure they're free during this) (11) Hook up the new drain tubing (clear tube around metal tube, tighten clamp), and where the tube exits on the outside (top of unit), clip it to the black drain tray. (12) Reconnect all wires (except the thermistor from earlier) and use the extra sealer to patch any holes where wires come into the freezer compartment. (13) Reverse all other steps to put it back together. Read More... 4 People found this story helpful Do-It-Yourself Rating: Repair Time Estimate: 1-2 hours Tools: Socket Set
