Michael M San Leandro , CA June 27, 2015 Appliance: Whirlpool Upright Freezer EV171NYMS03 Burnt smell then freezer stopped cooling Replaced the relay as it had slightly smoldered insulation edges. But then it turned out the fan motor (evap) had burned out, because the fan blade had shifted on the motor axis until it got blocked by a screw. Replaced evap motor and fan blade and everything works again! As the new fan blade now has a metal strip preventing unduly shift, this should never happen again (or in other words the original fan blade was of faulty design.) The heat probe I'd ordered because about 3 months ago the freezer drain got clogged by ice buildup. This piece actually requires calm nerves to install as you have to take apart almost everything around the defrost heater and then wrap the aluminum around the defrost heater electrical insulation tube without breaking it. Time will tell if this now helps avoiding drain blockages.
