John G Sloan , NY October 15, 2014 Appliance: Maytag Top Loading Washer LAT9304AAE Maytag lat9304aae would fill but that was it We're in situation that, unfortunately, it's not that unique these days. My wife is an only child so when both her parents suffered catastrophic illnesses 10 years ago, she gave up everything to take care of them. We moved to Buffalo, NY, from Brownsville, TX, to provide them with the 24/7 care they require. I have been Type 1 Diabetic for over 35 years. Less than a year after we moved up here, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Kidney Failure and was no longer able to work. Because of blackouts I have broken my right leg two different times in four different places and have had at a total of 9 major surgeries in the last 6 years. Fast forward to September, 2014. My father-in-law had succumbed to Dementia on their 50th wedding anniversary in ‘08. My mother-in-law, confined to a wheelchair after having suffered a Spinal Stroke in ‘04, is still going fairly strong but still has myriad serious medical conditions. I do what I can to help with her care because my wife is working two part-time jobs plus taking catering jobs as they are available. (She's an amazing cook) Needless to say, we're on a very tight budget. So when our washer conked out our options were to try to fix it first. The machine would fill but it wouldn't pump/drain or spin automatically. I could manually advance the timer one click at a time and get it to pump/drain & spin but it wouldn't agitate or enter the rinse cycle at all. The timer would run through the entire wash but it wasn't engaging the washer motor. I'm pretty handy though I haven't done a lot with AC other than just minor stuff so this was a learning experience for me. After scouring & posting on a number of DIY forums, I learned it was most likely the timer. On this washer, at least, the control panel components are each pretty simple remove & replace jobs. Still looking for a cheap way out, I found a used timer on eBay for under $50 (14 day warranty). Since I'm writing this, obviously that one *didn't* solve the problem & became a problem in and of itself. The person on DoItYourself.com who helped me the most recommended APP so I ordered a NEW timer. The part arrived 2 days later & 10 minutes after that, the washer was working again. Some medical bills won't get paid this month but we don't have to blow $15 twice a week at the laundromat either. This really was a slam dunk. If you've got a decent toolbox & know how to use a multimeter, this is a very simple R&R and can literally save you hundreds. Just go to DoItYourself.com for research & questions, skip the drama and buy a NEW part from Appliance Parts Pros!
