Gerald S Pecatonica , IL September 20, 2014 Appliance: Model WHIRLPOOL DUET WASHER Horrible noise when in use expecially during spin cycle Tore entire machine down to get to wash drum. Found it had a broken "spider" which is common with most front load machines. The drum is stainless steel but the spider is cast aluminum and it does not do well when exposed to laundry soap. It was pretty much disintegrated as a matter of fact. Anyway my machine is twelve years old and after some smooth talking, I was able to convince Whirlpool to send me a new wash drum at no cost. My warranty was one of the older ones and the drum had a "limited lifetime guarantee" according to the user guide. Unfortunately no one at the company could find a copy of the guide. I Faxed a few pages to them and they were satisfied with that. There is a video on YouTube that explains the teardown in great detail so my laptop and I did it together. The machine now runs like a new one but I did have to purchase the front half of the plastic wash tub from Appliance Parts Pro (as I do with all my appliance repairs). The bearings and seal (which are located in the rear half of the wash tub usually go first on these units) but mine were fine so I left them in place. They get $350 for this half of the tub but bearings and seals are available on the WWW for anywhere from $40 and up. They are easy to replace and the bearings can be hammered in (on outer race only). The wash drum drive shaft seems to be a slip fit so the bearings do not have to be pressed onto it. Excellent product and likewise service from Appliance Parts and Whirlpool. I have the matching Duet drier and it has required a couple thermal cutouts in the twelve years I have had possession. Those failures were caused by me not cleaning the exhaust pipe on a routine basis. I now do that and also remove the cover from the unit's blower wheel to clean in there. It gets fouled up pretty bad. There you have it; if I now had a washer (and parts in hand) it would be a half day job! One last note; pay attention where the suspension springs go on the wash tub...I spent over an hour trying to get them back in the proper position. There are four different ways to install and none seem right! They both go in the slots closest to the front of the machine.
