There was a good deal of satisfaction attributable to repairing a well built machine after looking over the junk that is being sold new. New machines comply with EPA rules for water conservation, etc but I've never spoken with a repairman that liked them. The most challenging part was removing old fasteners that haven't been touched in many, many years. No wonder Maytag's commercials used to talk about lonely repairmen.
