The recoil starter assembly starts the engine by using the grip to pull the rope, which activates the starter pulley and spring, causing the flywheel to rotate and start the engine. Over time, the starter spring can become stretched, causing the rope to seize up or fail to retract. The housing itself could also become damaged. It’s often easiest to replace the entire recoil starter assembly with this OEM model rather than individual components. The installation can be done quickly with a screwdriver and wrench by removing the three bolts that hold the assembly in place. This genuine OEM part is manufactured by MTD. It fits lawn mowers, tillers, log splitters, and other small engines made by MTD, as well as models from Bolens, Yard-Man, Yard Machines, Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, and Husky. This part includes the starter housing that protects the flywheel and other internal components, along with a starter pulley, spring, pull rope, and grip. The hardware required for this assembly is not included and must be purchased separately.
