Ash for Model Number GSH25JFXBBB

I need help with my GE side by side refrigerator (GSH25JFXBB). Few weeks back, the back panel in the freezer frosted over and foods in the fresh food section started freezing. Then one fine day it stopped cooling altogether. I unplugged it and let it defrost. After that it worked ok for two weeks and now it has started to freeze everything again. There is a little frost visible on the freezer coil panel. After researching online I checked the main board - unplug connectors and test for continuity. There is no continuity between J7 and J9. I also checked the J1 connector and all 3 thermistor circuits (5-2, 5-3, 5-4) seem to be open. So If I am correct then I need to replace the defrost heater and all 3 thermistors. Am I doing something wrong or is it normal for all these components to fail at the same time? Is there something else I need to look at? Thanks. Ash

Answer

Ash, You would want to do a resistance check on all of the thermistors and they should read 5K ohms at 77 degrees, 14.4K ohms at 36 degrees and 42.2K ohms at 0 degrees. You would also want to double check the heater by doing a continuity test at the heater itself. This will be a defrost issue that you are dealing with and it could be a bad limiter which should have continuity even when warm and if it does not it is faulty. If the heater has no continuity it is faulty. If all checks ok then the control board would be the issue.
