Mary, The way to gain access to the filter area would be to remove the front panel of the unit. This will be the best way to initially clean it if it has lots of build up. I am attaching a copy of the service manual to help you with this. To keep this area clean it would be best to get a dryer vent clean kit. This kit is not only for cleaning the duct in the front of the dryer without having to take it apart but is also for cleaning the venting that goes from the back of the dryer to the outside of the home. The dryer vent clean kit would be part number TJRLE202.
