Answer Bill, It's a simple check if you have a multimeter TJMA-DMT3 . Turn the power off to the water heater, remove the cover panel,and the interior cover, disconnect the wires at the elenment terminal and check for a "Closed" circuit. One indication of an open element is, the hot water is not as hot as usual or the hot water doesn't last as long as usual. You could also turn off the power, turn off the water and drain the tank.
