Kevin for Model Number GARF19XXPK02

We are chasing a freezer issue (could be fridge as well) that ice-cream will get frosty assumed to be from freezer not operating correctly. I replaced Capacitor, Evaporator Fan Motor, Defrost Bimetal this weekend. Back of the freezer is warm to touch in a sub-freezing garage. I opened the back to see if the fan beside the compressor is the issue, but it is spinning fine. The compressor did not seem to be coming on when the fan was on. We put the original capacitor back into, disconnect the fan to hear the compressor, it came on, we repeated new to old capacitor 3 times, each with the compressor making noise with old not new. I reassembled the fridge with old capacitor, and will repeat frozen water in bottle test to see if it come back on. Questions: 1) The fridge I believe has a heater to prevent freezing of the fridge items, what triggers this? 2) In general why would the back of the freezer where the coils are, run HOT. Fan running fine. 3) could the compressor be bad, or need coolant? I assume both of these will require a certified tech.

Answer

Kevin, it would be recommended that the freezer temperature is checked with a thermometer to identify if it is reaching proper temperatures. If it is, but it takes a long while to cool down, the condenser coils would need to be checked for dust build-up as this can cause improper cooling. If the condenser is clean, the failure would likely be in the sealed system and would require an EPA certified tech to properly diagnose and repair.
