Gary, This type of issue would be more likely an air leak from outside the unit causing condensation that is building up and freezing the air ducts. You will want to check the door seals and the dispenser door to make sure that they do not have air leaks. As far as removing the damper control you would remove the cover over the damper and in the freezer remove the icemaker and the duct at the top of the unit that goes to the icemaker. There will be 4 tabs you have to release in the corner for the damper control to come out of the unit.
