The Damper Control is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It regulates the airflow between the freezer and refrigerator compartments, maintaining the appropriate temperatures in each section. This component ensures that cold air is distributed properly, contributing to the overall efficiency and performance of the refrigerator.

Common causes of a bad damper control can include wear and tear over time, electrical failures, or mechanical obstructions. A malfunctioning damper control can lead to temperature imbalances, affecting the preservation of food.

Symptoms of a bad damper control include:

  • Inconsistent temperatures between the freezer and refrigerator
  • Freezer overly cold while the refrigerator is too warm, or vice versa
  • Frost buildup in the refrigerator compartment
  • Unusual noises coming from the damper area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Hello James, in checking this found the manufacturer has updated the damper to a newer design, if the old damper had wires as part of the damper assembly then the newer damper would require a harness adapter which is part WP67005162.

Hello Scott, there is no information from the manufacturer on what lubricant was used, if it is white it is likely Lubriplate, however a lot of current manufacturers use a food-grade silicone grease in this type of application, the important things are that what is used is both odorless and non-toxic. ,

I have a Whirlpool double door with freezer on bottom, with ice maker and water dispenser on the left door. The freezer was left slightly open overnight and now it will not work. The refrigerator is barely cooling also now. I tried resetting and “nothing.” Still the same. I unplugged and plugged back in and still the same. I tried opening all doors and unplugging for 24 hrs. and still not working. I understand it could be the damper being stuck or bad, due to the door being left open. Any ideas?

CeeBee, Remove the drawer from the freezer and remove the back panel. Check for ice build up around the evaporator fan motor. Also check to make sure that the evaporator coils are not frozen over.

Ed, the refrigerator thermistor 12002355 would need to be tested for resistance. With the refrigerator power cord unplugged, the sensor can be tested from the temperature control at connection J2 from pin 1 white wire to pin 3 white/orange wire. At 10°F, the resistance should measure around 70KO. If the sensor is around 70KO, the failure would be with the temperature control board WPW10503278, if the sensor is not around that resistance, the sensor would need to be replaced.

The diffuser motor has been running constantly for 2 years plus, grinding noise, etc. Pulled it out, the noise stopped. Fridge is cold, freezer cold. Thats why I left it go so long. Now the fridge compartment is starting to freeze (some items) more often. I don't mind replacing the diffuser assembly but ask if it could be running because of another control element like a thermostat, etc. Does the assembly come with those other elements? How do I troubleshoot?

1 Answer

Ace, The diffuser has a microswitch on it that would cause the motor to not realize its position and cause it to continue to rotate so you would just need to replace the motor.
